Rhein-Neckar Tram on the BUGA 23-Express

Just in time for the start of the German national horticulture show (BUGA) in Mannheim, Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (rnv) commissioned the first Rhein-Neckar-Tram (RNT). The RNT built by Skoda Transportation is rnv‘s new tram generation and is designed to provide passenger comfort and be sustainable. By Sigrid Riewe-Scholz

After over 10,000 kilometres of test runs, rnv received approval for the first tram of this new type, and the RNT has now officially entered passenger operation. The RNT runs on the BUGA-Express carrying visitors comfortably to and from the horticulture show. In the coming months, the operational area is to be gradually extended to the rest of the network. For in addition to the approximately half a million passengers who already use rnv services every day, thousands more BUGA visitors are expected in the next six months.

The RNT is the biggest investment rnv has ever made and should become a real driving force for public transport in the region. In a first batch, rnv ordered 80 vehicles in different length classes (30, 40 and 60 metres) for 265 million euros from Skoda Transportation. An option for further vehicles was also contractually agreed. The modern, barrier-free vehicles are equipped with HANNING & KAHL hydraulic braking systems and track brakes. With favourably-priced tickets and more frequent headway, the new tram generation should make public transport even more attractive and be an important foundation for successful transport turnaround in the Rhein-Neckar region.
