Xiaomi SU7: China’s Electric Innovative Newcomer with High-Tech Power

The Chinese tech giant Xiaomi enters the automotive sector with the Xiaomi SU7, an aerodynamic limousine coupé. Contrary to what the name might suggest, the Xiaomi SU7 is not an SUV.   by Sigrid Riewe-Scholz

Xiaomi aims to gain a foothold in the automobile world with innovative battery technology, driver-assistance systems, and electric motors. The founder and CEO, Lei Jun, stresses the significance of this step which marks the crossover from the smartphone industry to an intelligent eco-system of humankind, automobile and household. Xiaomi plans to become one of the five largest car manufacturers in the world in 15 to 20 years.

The Xiaomi SU7, a „smart device on wheels“, was developed in co-operation with well-known sub-suppliers and is made by BAIC in China. The technical data of the top model comprises an electric motor with 425 kW / 578 PS, acceleration to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, and a top speed of 265 km/h.

The electric motors are powered by a specially developed battery pack with inverted cell technology which should enable a theoretical range of over 1,200 kilometres. Xiaomi plans to gradually introduce highly automated and autonomous driving. The interior of the SU7 has several screens, including a 56-inch head-up display and a 16.1-inch central screen, which are connected via a high-performance in-car chip.

The on-board electronics are to set new benchmarks as all functions are available on screens within 1.5 seconds after opening the doors. The exact time and price for the market launch of the Xiaomi SU7 in Europe are not yet known.
