Writing History with the Opening of the Tram Extension in Curepipe.

In April 2018, HANNING & KAHL received a major contract from CAF Turnkey & Engineering to supply signalling and operational control technology for the new Mauritius Metro Express LRT system.

For this 3-phase project, we are supplying the signalling installations, our HCS-carborne equipment and the onboard computer for automatic vehicle locating (AVLS), as well as the LRV detection system for the traffic signal priority request system (TSPS). Our Berlin subsidiary Verkehrsautomatisierung Berlin GmbH is supplying the operational control technology, consisting of Operate & Observe and AVLS.

The first phase of the LRT system was completed in December 2019 with a length of 13 kilometres from Port Louis to Rose Hill. In2022, the line was extended to Curepipe in the second phase taking line length to 24 kilometres. This extension has now been commissioned. Work is currently in progress on the third phase which is scheduled to be opened in December.

The service will be operated with 18 low-floor trams built by Spanish Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) and equipped with our hydraulic braking system. These LRVs are parked and serviced on a modern depot. When completed, there will be 19 stop stations.
