Sustainable Plastics in the Electronics Industry: Recycled and Bio-Circular
The electronics industry faces the challenge of implementing more sustainable practices in order to minimise environmental impact. One promising development in this direction is the increased use of sustainable plastics, in particular recycled and bio-circular variants. Let’s take a closer look at the production of these eco-friendly plastics.
Recycled plastics:
1. Collection: The process begins with careful collection of used materials. This includes end consumer waste, industrial residue and production waste.
2. Sorting: The collected materials undergo a complex sorting process. They are sorted by type and thoroughly cleaned to remove contamination. This step is vital to ensure the quality of the recycled materials.
3. Melting and processing: After sorting, the cleaned plastics are melted and converted into pellets or granules. These are then used as raw materials for the manufacture of new products. The advantage is that the use of recycled plastics reduces the need for new raw materials and recycles waste at the same time.
Bio-circular plastics:
1. Biodegradable materials: Bio-circular plastics are based on biodegradable materials such as corn starch, sugar cane or other plant-based raw materials. These materials are renewable and can help reduce dependency on non-renewable resources.
2. Fermentation and polymerization: Some bio-circular plastics are gained through fermentation. Organic materials are converted into sugar in a fermentation process. This sugar is then formed into the desired polymers by polymerization, which serve as a basis for bio-circular plastics. The organic origin of these materials makes for higher biological degradability.
The increased use of recycled and bio-circular plastics in the electronics industry will substantially help reduce the ecological footprint. Progress of this kind will not only extend the service life of plastics, but also make a significant contribution to environmental protection.
