Avenio Nuremberg: Modern braking systems for future-orientated mobility.

The Avenio is a 100-percent low-floor vehicle consisting of three motor bogies and one trailer bogie. The first twelve of the vehicles made by Siemens were supplied from summer 2022 to bolster the highly-frequented lines. In order to be able to react flexibly to future requirements, Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG) secured the option to extend the order to up to 76 vehicles.   By Berthold Fingerhut

Back in 2020, VAG decided to purchase twelve Avenio vehicles from Siemens. HANNING & KAHL supplied the hydraulic brakes for these vehicles which included many proven components that had been developed for the Combino platform.

The motor bogies are equipped with spring-applied actuators of type HYS 106 which are controlled by a compact hydraulic unit HZY K100-DP. They are electrically activated via a valve-control stage which activates the proportional-pressure control valve in the hydraulic unit. The valve-control stage converts the braking commands transmitted from the train control unit into a PWM current suitable for the prop. valve. The required braking force is then set depending on the PWM-current value.

Proven technologies are also deployed in the trailer bogies, including active HYA 26/50 brake calipers activated by a compact HZY K100-AP hydraulic unit and a pressure accumulator with 1.4 litres of volume. In this case, the hydraulic unit is controlled via a valve-control stage which receives its signals from the train control unit.

For emergencies, the tram is equipped with a central auxiliary release system, consisting of an electric auxiliary release device and a manual hand pump which impact on an auxiliary release circuit which runs through the entire vehicle. The faulty bogie can be specifically and safely released with the HZY NL/HP auxiliary release hydraulic unit and the selection valves.
