The new Intermodal Transport Control System for Hamm`s public utilities
The family of ITCS systems which Verkehrsautomatisierung Berlin GmbH (VAB) has delivered continues to grow. At the end of September 2024, VAB supplied a new, innovative ITCS to Hamm public utilities. For the first time, terrestrial trunked radio (TETRA) has been integrated into the processes of dynamic call group formation. Preparations have already been made for advancing the development of a web-based control centre workstation. By Oleg Gujo
In this digital age, transport providers depend on modern instruments and systems designed to ease the daily work of drivers, traffic planners and control centre staff, and make public transport more attractive for passengers. The new ITCS system used by Hamm’s public utilities is now performing these tasks in productive operation.
Hamm`s transport providers has over 70 buses which mainly run in the city centre and are integrated into the ITCS. Apart from standard functions like vehicle tracking in tabular and map views, nominal-actual comparison on the line, connection to the data hub via real-time data interfaces VDV 453 and 454, text communication between drivers and schedulers, compilation of reports and of a real-time operations protocol with recording of important system events, the ITCS system is also connected to the TETRA radio network used by Hamm public utilities. When a driver has made an oral request, the ITCS can set up individual or group calls.
At the same time, schedulers in the OCC can form dynamic call groups, e.g. per line, selection of vehicles in a list view or in the vicinity of a selected vehicle on the map. Following creation of the dynamic call group, the TETRA radios supplied by Hytera are automatically assigned to the new call group in the ITCS control centre and in the vehicles concerned. Call groups which are no longer required are automatically cancelled.
Apart from the classic implementation of the ITCS client solution, Verkehrsautomatisierung Berlin GmbH is looking at development of a web-based client to give customers greater flexibility when using the ITCS. As part of the solution, the first view – the line band – was implemented with the web technologies. A generic interface for connection of the web client was implemented thus enabling future-proof extension of the ITCS web client.
Existing and also future functions are taken into consideration when implementing the web client solution. For example, the vehicles on a line can be integrated into the text and language communication, scheduling measures triggered, and vehicles of other lines displayed.
The modular structure of the VAB ITCS system, the high degree of customisability and the trend-setting ongoing development distinguish the product, making it a vital and future-proof instrument for customers.
