New Trams for Iasi
Turkish vehicle manufacturer Bozankaya is continuing to successfully expand on the Romanian market. The company has already supplied 18 modern tram vehicles to transport provider CTP Iasi – a significant step towards strengthening public transportation in the large north-eastern Romanian city. By Christian Knaust
Bozankaya had already produced and supplied 16 vehicles for Iasi in 2019 and 2020. These first units quickly established themselves in daily operations and in the cityscape. On account of the positive experiences made, a further slightly revised 2-section vehicle was constructed in 2025 and officially presented in May. Iasi’s fleet of modern low-floor vehicles is thus growing continuously and making an important contribution to sustainable mobility in the region.
With a length of 20m and a capacity of up to 200 passengers, the vehicles are designed for inner-city traffic. The vehicles consist of 2 car body modules, with a motor bogie under each one.
Each motor bogie axle is equipped with a spring-applied actuator with primary suspension of the HYS 258 series. These actuators impact with an actuator force of ca. 33 kN on an internally ventilated brake disc which is flanged to the outside of the wheel. Hydraulic control is via a compact HZY K100 DPR hydraulic unit. Stepless electric activation, wheel-slide protection and also error monitoring are performed with a brake control unit HEY-C with integrated CAN-Bus.
The vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary release system for emergencies, which when initially controlled by the vehicle control system activates the smaller auxiliary release hydraulic units.
Bozankaya vehicles also operate in the western city of Timisoara. In Iasi, HANNING & KAHL`s hydraulic braking system makes a decisive contribution to the operating safety and reliability of the new trams. By doing so, we support the successful modernisation of local public transport in the large city in north-eastern Romania and strengthen vehicle manufacturer Bozankaya’s position as a partner for safe and sustainable mobility solutions.
